The World Health Organization has warned: “A post-antibiotic era – in which common infections and minor injuries can kill – far from being an apocalyptic fantasy, is instead a very real possibility for the 21st Century.”
The fast food restaurant giant Subway realizes that this growing health concern over antibiotic drug resistance is a major concern for their customers and they are taking action by planning to gradually stop selling meats raised with antibiotics as reported by The Wall Street Journal. Subway will be selling chicken without antibiotics across all of its roughly 27,000 USA locations by spring next year, and the company aims to drop antibiotics from its turkey, pork and beef production in the future too.
The food industry has made some big changes this year but a lot more work still needs to be done. We look forward to seeing more restaurants like Chipotle’s stop serving GMO containing food.
