We had a Mom from the GMOFreeBaby community ask for suggestions on toys for a baby that is under 6 months old. She is looking for toys that are not plastic and that don’t over stimulate. We are hoping our community will have some suggestions to add to the list below.
For my babies I used organic cloth toys which are easy for baby to hold and sometimes chew on. I would always of course wash them well before use too! An important aspect to look out for when buying a cloth toy is to check that both the outside and inside of the toy is organic. So the fabric should be 100% certified organic cotton and the stuffing needs to be 100% organic too. Your baby will more then likely put the toy in their mouth at some point and you want to make sure that the toy is safe to go in their mouth.
If you are looking for an alternative to plastic teethers there are wood teethers available which are a great organic alternative. They are usually hand polished smooth for your baby’s gums so you don’t need to worry about splinters:) Be sure to look for a teether that is not treated with any chemicals, wax or ink.
Montessori Inspired Toys
Montessori baby toys are great for childhood development and should be used with parent supervision. They help develop skills like grasping, puzzle solving, and discovery learning. These types of toys though are usually only for children over three months old.
With all toys be sure to check the manufacturers recommended age before buying to ensure the toy you are buying is appropriate and safe for your baby.
