ID-100200801Leave my pineapple alone!  The argument or “marketing” of the GMO pineapple that we see in headlines and articles is that they are going to engineer the pineapple to include lycopene, an antioxidant compound that could help fight cancer.  News flash pineapples already are designed to be a source of food with strong antioxidant properties.

Here is some information found on MedicalNewsToday.com regarding the possible health benefits of consuming pineapple for Cancer:

Cancer: As an excellent source of the strong antioxidant vitamin C, pineapples can help combat the formation of free radicals known to cause cancer.

Diets rich in beta-carotene may also play a protective role against prostate cancer, according to a study conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health’s Department of Nutrition and has been shown to have an inverse association with the development of colon cancer in the Japanese population.  (Reference sources found on MedicalNewsToday.com)

High fiber intakes from all fruits and vegetables are associated with a lowered risk of colorectal cancer.

According to the American Cancer Society:

“there are studies suggesting that bromelain [found in pineapple] and other such enzymes may be used with standard cancer treatment to help reduce some side effects (such as mouth and throat inflammation due to radiation treatments).”

The article in MedicalNewsToday.com also listed many other health benefits that pineapples naturally provide for: Age-related macular degeneration, Asthma prevention, Blood pressure, Diabetes, Digestion, Fertility, Healing and Inflammation, Heart health and Skin Damage. 

Fresh Del Monte Produce Inc. has engineered a pink pineapple that includes lycopene, an antioxidant compound that gives tomatoes their red color and may have a role in preventing cancer. Hey I have an idea why not eat Tomatoes and Pineapples if you would like the health benefits… USDA has approved importation of the pineapple, which would be grown only outside of the United States; it is pending FDA approval.  See news article here.
